Daily Reading: Woe to Those Who Plan Iniquity
Today’s Readings for the Holy Mass
In today’s first reading the prophet Micah tells us that the wicked are doomed
Woe to those who plan iniquity,
and work out evil on their couches;
But it doesn’t often seem like the wicked get punished. Too often in our fallen world, the selfish, dishonest and downright mean seem to be very successful, while the honest, hard working and compassionate get stuck with every disadvantage.
The psalm verifies for us that our feelings are not wrong. It starts off asking God why He stands aloof while the wicked man flourishes and the righteous man suffers. But the psalm ends with a statement of hope. God does see. He does care. His response may not be the “justice” that we would like to see in this world. But the wicked and selfish people in the world sacrifice things that are far more valuable than material gain. In the righteous man, the treasures of Heaven are nurtured.
The life of Jesus reflects this reality. The world – in the form of the Pharisees – turn against Him. But he responds with righteousness, trusting in the Father’s plan. As God, Jesus also shows that He has compassion for those who suffer and are downtrodden. He gives them healing and shows them God’s love.
Reflection Questions:
1. Have you ever felt that God lets evil people off too easily? How do today’s readings make you rethink that?
2. What are some “treasures in Heaven” that you have gained by following God’s will in your life rather than taking the path of iniquity?
