Today’s Readings for the Holy Mass

Today’s readings at Holy Mass are about dwelling with God.

The prophet Jeremiah tells us in the first reading what is required to remain in God’s presence.

1. Following the truth
2. Faithfulness to God
3. Conversion of heart – to love our neighbor.

The psalm tells us that it’s worth the effort! This is one of my favorite psalms, speaking of longing for God and of the beauty of being in His presence.

Blessed they who dwell in your house!
continually they praise you.
Blessed the men whose strength you are!
They go from strength to strength.
I had rather one day in your courts
than a thousand elsewhere;
I had rather lie at the threshold of the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

But Jesus reminds us in today’s Gospel that the promise of God’s presence will be fulfilled in the next life, but it begins in this world. Jesus’ parable shows how the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of sin grow together in this world, sometimes making it difficult to see the Kingdom of God. But at the end of the age, the Kingdom of God will be purified and shine in glory.

Reflection Questions:
1. How do you make your home a spiritual and holy place?
2. How do you prepare your heart to be a fitting dwelling place for God?
