Daily Reading: Blessed Are Your Eyes

In today’s first reading for the Holy Mass, God speaks through the prophet Jeremiah to accuse the Hebrew people of violating the Covenant. God had brought them into the “Garden land” – notice how God’s description of the Promised Land echoes the Garden of Eden. But the Hebrew people were unfaithful to God just as Adam and Eve had been. The Hebrew people fell into the worship of false pagan gods. They sacrificed the real source of life (“living water”) for myths that had no power to give them goodness (broken cisterns that held no water).

The psalm today extolls God as the true source of living water. God remains faithful to the Covenant even when HIs children stray. Note that in the Old Testament, the term “justice” first means faithfulness to the Covenant. God’s justice and faithfulness have no limits.

In the Gospel reading from Saint Matthew, Jesus’ description of the Jewish people who are blind to the truth reflects those in the Old Testament who could not see God’s goodness before their very eyes. But the Apostles were the beginning of His Kingdom, which would be led by the Holy Spirit to all truth:

But blessed are your eyes, because they see,
and your ears, because they hear.
Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people
longed to see what you see but did not see it,
and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

May we be open to the Holy Spirit and faithful to every Truth of the Faith.
