Today’s Readings for the Holy Mass

In today’s first reading from Isaiah, King Hezekiah is faced with his mortality and pleads with God for healing. God grants his request and heals him from his terminal illness.

The psalm reminds us that God is the Lord of Life. While the psalmist doesn’t seem to fully grasp the idea of resurrection from the dead, he understands that God is the God of the living – that all life comes from God.

In the Gospel according to Matthew, Jesus leads us to the Lord of Life.

Jesus was going through a field of grain on the sabbath.
His disciples were hungry
and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them.
When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him,
“See, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath.”

To the Pharisees, the Sabbath was a law to be observed. Observing the Sabbath was an act of commitment to the faith, but without the true meaning behind the Sabbath – without love – it was a dead act. Jesus reminds us that the purpose of the Sabbath is the Covenant – to spend time with the God we love. The Sabbath comes from the God of the living, so it should also be a living act.

Reflection Questions:
1. How do you celebrate the true meaning of the Sabbath?
2. Do you have any “dead” religious practices you need to give life to?
