In our first reading from Revelation 4:1-11 Saint John has a vision of entering the throne room of God. The 24 elders represent the 12 tribe of Israel and the 12 Apostles – the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. When they worship God they throw down their crowns, indicating that they surrender their rightful honor and authority to God. If you’ve never studied Revelation, don’t get too caught up in all of the symbolism yet. Saint John is setting the stage for his vision of the final judgment. The important thing to note is that in Heaven everyone is united in their worship of God. It won’t be that way on the earth as John’s vision continues.

The song of praise in Psalm 150:1-6 is meant to echo the praise given to God in His throne room in Heaven, as we see in the first reading. Read through this psalm slowly and use it to surrender yourself to the Lord.

Jesus’ parable in Luke 19:11-28 is a bit sobering, as it points to the judgment of our actions. In our final judgment, we will not only be judged on whether or not we believed in Jesus. We will also be judged on how we have used our time, talent and spiritual gifts for the Kingdom. This story hints that while justice will reign supreme in Heaven, justice and equality are not the same thing. Even in Heaven some people will receive a greater share in God’s glory, as God gives to each of us what we earned by cooperating with grace and participating in the Kingdom of God in this life.

Reflection Questions

1. How do you need to surrender yourself to the Lord? What is holding you back from complete surrender?

2. How are you using your “talents” to serve the Kingdom of God?
