Today is All Soul’s Day, the day that we remember the Church Suffering and pray for the souls in Purgatory who have nobody to pray for them.

The first reading from Wisdom 3:1-9 is my favorite reading for funerals. What better message could we receive than, “They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace.” The amazing thing is that this is from the book of Wisdom – in the Old Testament. Even before Jesus opened the way to Heaven, God was revealing His plan for redemption and eternal life. These words must have given hope to the Hebrew people. How much more hope should they give us who place our trust in Jesus?

The psalm is from Psalm 23:1-6. How many times have we heard these words: “The Lord is my shepherd . . .” We can forget how amazing they are. Our all-powerful God personally leads us through this life and into eternal life with Him.

The second reading from Romans 5:5-11 reminds us where our hope comes from. Saint Paul defines hope in terms of Jesus’ act of redemption. Jesus died for us while we were still sinners – still separated from Him. We didn’t earn His act of love. He loved us in our sin. He sought us out in our separation. We now need to return that love by trusting in Him and striving for Heaven by cooperating with the grace He won for us – that is the virtue of Hope.

Today’s Gospel from John 6:37-40 are verses of hope. Jesus tells us that nobody who belongs to Him will be lost, and that whoever believes in Him will have eternal life. Today we commend the souls of those who died faithful to the Lord to His mercy as they go through their purification in preparation to be united to the Holy Trinity forever in Heaven.

Reflection Questions:
What did you do yesterday that will help you have eternal life?
What do you do to remember the souls in Purgatory on days other than All Soul’s Day?
