Catholic Spirituality - Best of the WebLooking for methods that show you how to pray? One of the greatest methods of prayer we have at our disposal is to pray with the saints.

We are not alone in our quest to grow in Catholic spirituality. Not only do we benefit from the family of the Church on earth (the Church Militant), we also benefit from the Church of all who have gone before us into the Kingdom of God (the Church Triumphant). Praying with the saints gives you a way to structure your daily prayer. It gives you the added benefit of gaining their help in your prayer and throughout your day!

Connie Rossini shares her own personal litany to the saints in her article “Are you making a daily morning offering?” and then follows up with “Making friends with the saints” where she also promotes the book Seven Saints for Seven Virtues.

How to Pray with with the Saints

The Catholic Church is unfortunately well known for its superstitions surrounding prayers to the saints. We tend to use the saints as magical charms who can be invoked with special “spells” to get what we want.

This is not how to pray with the saints.

The saints are fellow members of the Church – disciples of Jesus – who have opened their lives to grace and have made it into the eternal Kingdom of God. They are models of faith for us. More importantly, they are companions that we can turn to for help. We ask them to pray for us just as I might ask you to pray for me. Their position in Heaven makes them powerful intercessors for us – but not in some magical sense.

Saint Francis teaches us how to pray.

Connie mentions Saint Francis de Sales in her article. This is one of my favorite saints as well. He is a great spiritual master who teaches us how to have an active, lively love for God.

Pray to the saints as your companions. Treat them like brothers and sisters in Christ. Ask for their help – and ask them to teach you through the grace of Christ the virtue and faith they modeled.
