Our Work is Not Done
Well, today is the big day. My wife went out to vote this morning before she had to go to work. We were fortunate to get there after the before work rush and we won’t have to worry about standing in line tonight during the after work rush. The Democrats and Republicans have both worked very hard to get their candidate elected. I have to say that I am very proud of the Catholics who have campaigned strongly in favor of life. The bishops have been exemplary in their public corrections of publicly spoken errors. Catholic media has come out strongly and explicitly in favor of life and have courageously taken on the entrenched attitude in the Church that our faith has no place in the ballot box. There was also a very strong grassroots effort among Catholics to support each other, inform fellow Catholics and convince people of the predominant importance of the life issues. All-in-all, the Catholic Church was better represented in this election cycle than they have been in a very long time.
However, we cannot fall into the trap of believing that this presidential election ends our responsibility. In reality, the actual election isn’t all that important. Sure, if Obama gets elected he could enact all kinds of morally reprehensible legislation, especially with the backing of a Democrat-controlled congress and senate. But that legislation can be undone.
What is truly important is the fact that the president who is elected is a reflection of the hearts of the American people. The important work of Catholics is to change hearts. Whether Obama or McCain wins, that task will not be completed. It would be good for abortion to be limited by legislation. However, until the hearts of Americans see abortion as the abhorrent evil that it is, we cannot claim true victory. I hope that the great mobilization that we have seen in these past months has been motivated by a heart for the Kingdom, not just by temporary political fervor.
