Our politicized culture even makes science into a propaganda tool instead of an investigation into objective truth. Does anyone really know if “global warming” is real or not? “Science” seems to support both sides of the argument because science has been used as a weapon rather than as an honest search for the truth. This election season has seen more than its fair share of nonsense. When I complained to my mom that people just don’t think, she replied that people do think, it’s just that they think wrongly. American culture has mastered the art of rationalizing evil. Rationalization is the epitome of what Fr. Vann calls “intemperance of the mind.” Mom hit the nail on the head. Are decisions of conscience private moral choices upon which nobody else should tread? Our culture seems to think so. However, the moral conscience always develops in the context of community as we seek objective moral truth together. The fact that our local newspaper editors won’t comment on moral choices, but will endorse a presidential candidate, shows that they do not understand the true nature of conscience. Continue reading
